Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic, public speaker and Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a channel that hosts videos, comments and an analysis of portrayals in popular cultures. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for nearly a decade. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which explores the representations of females in narratives from popular culture. In her efforts to break down stereotypes of women that exist in pop culture, she also works on issues related the gender-specific harassment of women as well as different classes of individuals on the internet. With a master's in political and social thought at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaker and she has delivered talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was interested in the gender issue and feminist movements from a very early stage of her life. In 2009, while still studying at university, she created her Feminist Frequency site. The ambitious lady planned to create a web series examining the gender roles in video games. However, she was the subject of an online harassment campaign. But the assault did not deter her instead it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist critic of media. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feministism, she's recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization focused on the portrayal of women in popular media and the narratives that surround them.
